Roni Murillo is an award-winning artist based in New York, with a rich background in fine art, graphic design, and illustration. She holds a BFA from Syracuse University and continued her studies at the Art Students League in NYC. Her work has been featured in galleries, private collections, and publications across the U.S., Central America, and South America.
Roni’s art is known for its bold energy, vivid color, and emotionally charged imagery. While she began her career creating figurative works, a personal journey—including undergoing eye surgery, led to a significant shift in her style. This experience pushed her toward more expressive and abstract forms, creating a visual language that is both personal and universally resonant.
In addition to her fine art, Roni designs eye-catching posters, marketing materials, and illustrations that carry the same creative intensity as her paintings.
THE CREATIVE PROCESS
For me, art is an emotional journey driven by curiosity, experimentation, and the thrill of discovering the unexpected. My work is deeply personal, filled with color, energy, and movement. It’s not just about the final image; it’s about where the process takes me.
I love to work with a wide range of materials and textures. Alongside traditional media like acrylics, watercolors, charcoal, oil pastels, and pencils, I incorporate unconventional elements such as gauze, burlap, plaster, shelf liner, and other found objects. These materials help bring depth, texture, and a tactile quality to my pieces. I want viewers to feel the work, not just see it.
Often, a piece might begin with a more realistic image, but as I build layers, respond to the materials, and follow the emotional flow of the process, the artwork transforms. It may evolve into something entirely different from where it started. My choices are deeply intuitive, driven by impressions, memories, and spontaneous inspiration.
I sometimes repurpose sections of older work, tearing, cutting, and reimagining them into something new. This ongoing transformation reflects how I view the creative process: constantly evolving, never static.
Ultimately, I want people to engage with the work up close, to notice the layers, the textures, and the hidden details. I’m the person in a museum who has to resist the urge to touch the paintings and lean in too close. That’s the kind of connection. I hope to inspire, whether you're a seasoned collector or someone discovering art for the first time.
